HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) – A former president of the Mt. Gilead-Improve Water Association in Marion County has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than $100,000 from the water association.

A news release from the Marion County Sheriff’s Department said Marcus Hull was arrested Thursday and charged with embezzlement after an investigation involving the Mississippi State Auditor’s Office. A release from State Auditor Shad White’s office said Hull is accused of embezzling $106,599.63 over a two-year period.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation was launched after authorities learned the funds were missing from the water association.

“My office was happy to work with the sheriff’s office to provide help with their investigation. All local law enforcement should know we stand ready to assist with any financial crimes investigation,” White said in a news release.

Sheriff Berkley Hall said Hull was the president of the association when the money went missing.

Hull has been booked into the Marion County Jail. Bond will be set when he makes his initial appearance in Marion County Justice Court.
